Wonderful week with our group of artists in April, sketching and painting the historic city of Dubrovnik and the beautiful Adriatic coast of Croatia. We had joined the Travel Department “Discover Dubrovnik” tour, staying in the lovely Valamar Tirena Hotel outside the city by the sea. This was our perfect base, quiet and peaceful, yet a very short distance by bus from the Old Town. April weather was cool and sunny, and we enjoyed strolling and sketching the city before the Summer crowds arrived.
Our local guide Suzanna brought the group on a guided walking tour of the Old Town to get our bearings, pointing out scenic locations to stop and sketch. After a wonderful lunch in the Bistro Revelin overlooking the Old Port, we stayed to paint the view across the harbour of the cathedral and city skyline.
“Artists at Work” – Sketching each other
Across the harbour, a beautiful vista of sea, coastline and islands, sketching in the sun while boats sailed past
St Lawrence Fort – Lovrijenac – at the edge of the city offers spectacular views after a short, steep hike
After a full day in the city it was nice to relax close to the hotel the next day, sketching the crystal clear waters, pine trees and rocky coves of the Babin Kuk peninsula. We found cafés with sunny terraces overlooking the Adriatic sipping cappuccinos while we sketched.
The fabulous Levanat restaurant became our regular spot during the week for lunch, coffee and evening cocktails as the sun went down.
We spread out on the rocks below the terrace to sketch in the sun, the shining Adriatic all around
Capturing the moment – my journal entry that day in my sketchbook:
“Adriatic Coast at Babin Kuk below Levanat Restaurant after delicious lunch of Mozzarella Gratinée with crisp white Croatian Sauvignon Blanc. After passing clouds the sun shines a steady stream. The rocks glisten gold in the warm early Spring sunshine. The waves wash softly ashore – a shaft of bright green, inky depths and sparkling trails of foam”
We took a day trip by boat to the lovely town of Cavtat, a short distance south of Dubrovnik. This laid back town and unspoilt coastal path was our idyllic painting location for the day.
All too soon our week is drawing to a close. Time for Sundowner G and Ts at the Levanat, the end of a great week of friendship and fun in a beautiful, inspiring location.
Thank you to our artists – Sinead, Deirdre, Ger, Attracta, Catherine, Maureen, Jenny, Maura, Pauline, Veronica and Caroline – for making our trip so enjoyable. Special thanks to Michael and Brian, our “Support Services” team for taking care of us and getting us around. Huge thanks too to the Travel Department team in Dublin and Croatia – it was wonderful and we’ll be back next year to a new destination!
